If you’re thinking about trying a new style of fitness, the first month is usually the part that feels scary. You don’t know what the classes are like, whether you’ll be sore, or whether you’ll be the slowest person in the room. This is a plain look at what the first month of CrossFit tends to feel like at our gym in New Berlin, so you know what’s normal before you walk in.

What to Expect in Your First Week at a Gym in New Berlin

When you’re new to our gym, we meet you at your first session. If we haven’t already talked about your experience on the phone, we’ll do that then. We introduce you to the coach, and we help you through that first hour of class.

We also recommend three to four classes that first week, based on your tolerance level. That number is a starting point, and we adjust it to you.

Soreness in the First Month: What’s Normal and What to Ask About

Soreness varies a lot, mostly based on your fitness level before you start. Because of that, we lean conservative in the first few days. How sore you are the next day, or the day after, tells us how much to increase or decrease the intensity.

Once you get used to this type of workout, you’ll still get sore. Some workouts will do it more than others. What we want is for you not to push so hard that you can’t function in your normal day-to-day life. If you’re feeling that way, tell your coach so we can adjust.

Why Going Slower Than Everyone Else Is Fine

Going slower than everyone else is encouraged, especially when you’re new to CrossFit and higher intensity fitness. We want you learning the proper movement, and we don’t want you pushing beyond your functional capacity. That means working within where your fitness and your quality of movement are right now.

What Progress Looks Like in Weeks Two and Three

In weeks two and three, you usually feel more comfortable with the people and start to understand some of the basic movements. Class is definitely less confusing. Your movement will improve in those first couple of weeks as your body adjusts to this type of fitness. We still recommend coming three to four times a week.

Small Wins to Notice Besides the Scale or the Barbell

Early wins are often quiet ones. You might feel like you can move a little better, or feel more comfortable during the warm-up. You’ll also get to know people, so walking in the door isn’t as overwhelming. And you’ll already have an idea of how class runs, which makes everything easier.

How to Fit CrossFit Into a Busy Week

Getting into a routine is important. If you’re not ready to commit to at least three days a week, we recommend making that a priority. You’re not going to see the results you want coming only one or two times a week, especially if you’re not doing other fitness outside of that.

If you miss a week, that is ok. Come back and start where you left off. You might have to come down a little in the difficulty of the workout. Missing a week, two weeks, or even a month is not an excuse to give up.

Questions to Ask Your Coach Before Month Two

We’d like new members to ask about a goal session. Maybe you want to decrease the amount of scaling or start coming more often. You can also ask how much you can push yourself while still maintaining quality movement.

Ready to Try a Class at Wisco CrossFit?

The easiest next step is to go to our website and set up a discovery call. Any of our contact forms will work, and we will get in touch with you. Please answer your phone or text us back so we know you’re interested. We’re real people on the other end, and we want to have a real conversation.

From there, we’ll get you set up for a trial class. If you’re not ready for that, you can come in and look at the gym first, and we can talk about the trial class then.

After the trial class, we will meet with you, discuss your goals and get you started!
